Liverpool close to next signing

After procuring the prodigious Fabio Borini earlier in the week, it appears as if Brendan Rodgers is closing in on another attacker, this time in the shape of Clint Dempsey.

Fulham’s flexible forward, whose christian name demands real care on the keyboard, scored 23 goals last season and has been linked to Liverpool ever since the new manager came in (we first reported it in May). Despite official rumblings to the contrary from Craven Cottage, it’s surely just a matter of time before Dempsey completes a move to Anfield.

Martin Jol would rather have his nipples roughly tweaked by a naked Jeremy Clarkson than lose Dempsey but, as is the way of modern football, it’s virtually impossible for mid-sized clubs to keep their top players if they decide they want to leave.

Whilst Dempsey has been a highly professional servant to the club, he clearly wouldn’t say no to a move to the northwest for a hopefully glorious final chapter to his career at the top level.

At 29, he doesn’t have much more to learn about the game. He’s a highly intelligent footballer who compensates for a lack of serious pace with great movement, anticipation and ‘mad skills’. He’s got a excellent touch and, most importantly, he hates to give the ball away – and seldom does. He’s the neat and understated antithesis of Andy Carroll and fits well into the technically astute team that Rodgers is clearly trying to engineer.

We think he will be an excellent buy for Liverpool.  Discuss….
