Manchester United – Nani are you OK?

There can be few players past or present who draw such polemic opinions as United’s Luis Nani. Heralded by some as the club’s best player and by others as inconsistent and frustrating, the truth is that he is probably both. At his best Nani is a one man game changer. He probably has more natural ability than anyone else at the club but his potential is still somewhat untapped.

With Nani there has always been a problem with consistency. He will score you a forty yard belter and then give the ball away foolishly in a dangerous area a few minutes later. He is like Cristiano Ronaldo at 19. He can amaze but still vexes. Fortunately for United, Ronaldo managed to iron out all the bad bits to become one of the best players that the world has ever seen. Manchester United fans contiune to pray for the same trajectory for Nani but he seems unable to completely transcend those inconsistencies.

Of course it’s not easy to be in the shadow of Ronaldo for club (previously) and country. If we ever see a player as good as Ronnie at Old Trafford again we will be fortunate indeed. But it would be nice if we could start to trust Nani to be a great team player and not give the ball away or balloon a shot from 40 yards when the pass is the obvious choice.

As an important aside here, many will have noticed how Nani regularly enrages Wayne Rooney with his decision making. It’s interesting to think that Nani’s most consistent periods for the club seem to have been when Wazza is out injured. Maybe Nani feels the Rooney hairdryer too frequently and fluffs his lines under pressure. If Nani does stay at the club, perhaps Fergie should ask his talisman to go a little easier on the Portuguese.

I honestly don’t know whether Nani will eventually combine his skill with better vision and understanding of the game. I also have no idea whether United will continue to give him the stage at Old Trafford. Perhaps even Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t know. If a really good offer came in for him, I think it would be considered because, whilst he is unbelievably dangerous and great to watch at times, I’m not sure the manager will ever completely trust him to make the right decisions throughout a game. If he does stay at Manchester United, this will be his make or break season at the club.

Nani should be sold.We failed to buy quality players and allowed the likes of Silva,Nasri,Ozil,Di Maria etc slip through our fingers because of Nani.He is inconsistent. Now,there is Nicholas Gaitan who can ease past defenders like a knife through butter. If we can get Nani and Anderson out of the club, maybe we can get Gaitan and Jarvi Martinez and they have great technique.
