According to widespread media reports, all three English suitors, Chelsea, City and United have agreed to the transfer fee and negotiated personal terms with the Lille’s Eden Hazard. It’s now up to him to decide and he has said that he will put us all out of our misery by June.
It’s a transfer which has all the hype of the Sneijder saga last summer. Manchester United fans are being put through the mill again but they will hope that this story has a much more satisfying conclusion.
The on-off Sneijder transfer provided a hellish subtext to the summer months of 2011 and a quick end to this topic would be very welcome for all parties.
After losing the title in the last few minutes of the season, the signing of Eden Hazard would be the perfect tonic for a United team that has great promise but needs a world class playmaker. The Belgian is probably the best young player in Europe and would provide the sort of genuinely exciting, top-drawer signing that has been lacking at Old Trafford since the advent of the Glazers.
United really need to make this signing if they want to compete with their neighbours next time out and the player may well be better suited to Old Trafford, where he would become one of the first names on the teamsheet of a very exciting young line up. City already have a glut of top creative midfielders and one wonders whether Hazard would play every week at The Etihad.
Whatever the outcome, can we please just get it over with?
