Arsenal – Podolski in so what now for RVP?

Further to Tuesday’s soccersweep story, reports today suggest that an agreement has been reached in principle, for the transfer of 26 year old FC Koln and Germany striker Lukas Podolski to Arsenal at the end of the season.

Quick, versatile and robust, Podolski’s overall scoring record (despite a loss of form at Bayern Munchen) offers ample proof that he knows where the goal is. He can play as a number 10, up top or as a wide man.  It’s an unusually quick transfer for Arsenal. The speculation had only just started when the transfer was all but concluded.

The speed of this transfer will also raise questions, in some quarters, about the future of Robin Van Persie. Has Podolski been signed as proof that Arsenal are serious about strengthening, or has the German been bought to soften the blow of VP’s impending departure? In short, is Podolski a replacement or reinforcement?

Roberto Mancini has again stated his admiration for the Dutchman in this morning’s press and at 28, with only one more big contract in him, RVP must be seriously considering his options.

But Mancini also states in the article that he believes Van Persie will stay at The Emirates and, with only a year left on his contract by this summer, Arsenal wouldn’t expect to make a huge amount from a transfer anyway.

Even Robin Van Persie himself probably isn’t sure about what his future holds but his desire to stay at Arsenal can only strengthen if Wenger continues to sign quality, established and accomplished players such as Podolski.
