Newcastle United: 3 players to improve The Toon

Ok, the Tottenham game at the weekend was painful, but needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. It’s been a sensational season so far and who could have predicted it when Andy Carroll was sold just over a year ago? The money wasn’t all reinvested in players immediately and the fans were outraged.

Fast forward 14 months things are looking more rosy than they have in over a decade.  Alan Pardew has steadied the ship but most of the gratitude must surely be reserved for Graham Carr, the chief scout extraordinaire. He has done so much good work in bringing in top players that have stayed under the radar until now.

So, far be it for me to tell him his job. He has probbaly already lined up another 5 players to add to Tiote, Cabaye, Ba, Ben Arfa and Coloccini. And providing Newcastle can hold onto these top players, the future is looking incredibly bright. But there are areas which need improvement. Here are some suggestions.

Defence

Danny Simpson has done a decent job on the right and works his socks off. But the left full back area for Newcastle could be improved. How about trying to snare Leighton Baines from Everton? Even a year ago that would sound ridiculous but, such has been the rise in prominence of Newcastle, that he is now a realistic target. Graham Carr may well continue to look abroad for quality players at a decent price but it would be great to see Baines charging up the wing for The Toon next season.

Midfield

Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Tiote are awesome. Newcastle will hope that they can stay fit because they are so much better than the back up. On the right hand side, Obertan is really pacey and has shown glimpses of class but there is great room for improvement. He’s worth his squad place but another right midfielder would be a real fillip for Newcastle. Although Christian Eriksen isn’t naturally a wide player, his dribbling skills suggest that he could play there to great effect.

Attack

Up front Newcastle look really strong. They have Ba and Cisse plus Leon Best and Ameobi in reserve. But you can always improve your front line and I think that this young lad has what it takes to get to the top. Iran isn’t the first place you think of when considering new purchases but this kid looks special and is definitely one for the future.

So who do you think Newcastle should sign next?
