Manchester United could win race for this powerhouse – report

A defender who takes free kicks anyone?

When David Moyes looks at his squad right now he will probably agree that the centre of the park needs the most urgent attention. We at soccersweep have stuck to our long-held opinion that Shinji Kagawa should be given the attacking midfield role. But Moyes obviously doesn’t agree and has mainly deployed the Japan international out wide so far this season.

Once the midfield and right-wing berth have been successfully filled Manchester United could well turn their attention to an ageing defence. The strength and class of the back 5 has underpinned all Manchester United’s success in the last decade. But with Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic all starting to show their age, that feeling of invulnerability is quickly dissolving.

Reports today suggest that the long term rebuilding process could begin with a highly rated young Nigerian defender. Musa Mohammed is reportedly being tracked by some of the biggest clubs in the world – but The Daily Star reckons Manchester Untied are at the front of the queue. It says:

MANCHESTER UNITED are hoping to win the race to sign Nigerian starlet Musa Mohammed ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona.

The defender captained Nigeria’s Under-17 team to World Cup glory in Abu Dhabi last week, producing a number of commanding and assured performances in the process.

Mohammed also showed his prowess from set-pieces scoring from the penalty spot in the 5-0 group win over Iraq.

If Manchester United ever find a centre back as good as Rio Ferdinand again we will be very surprised. Many top defenders have power, aerial ability and great reading of the game. Rio had all that but also enjoyed the sort of first touch that most strikers would be proud of.

Mohammed may not be the ball-playing maestro that Manchester United will ultimately need to replace Rio but, based on the clip below, he is a super striker of the ball.
