Pep Guardiola is set to embark on another huge summer of spending, at least judging by his first signing.
The Manchester Evening News were the first to spot Monaco’s Bernardo Silva flying into the city on Thursday evening, with the Monaco playmaker expected to complete a switch in the coming days.
Manchester City will pay the Ligue 1 champions £43million for the Portugal international, but this is likely to be just the start of their business.
Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna have all been released by the club, so Guardiola’s attention will no doubt be turning to available full-backs.
Willy Caballero’s time at the Etihad is also up, and they will be reluctant to leave the hapless Claudio Bravo as the only senior goalkeeper.
As for Silva, he has done a lot to command such a high fee.
The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals and assisted a further 10 in all competitions this season.
It remains to be seen where he will slot into City’s current set-up, and his arrival could raise questions about the future of Raheem Sterling.
