Even as Arsene Wenger’s decisions go, his call to drop Alexis Sanchez to the bench for the Liverpool game went down particularly badly with Arsenal fans.
It’s hard to blame the supporters for being infuriated when the Chilean’s name was omitted from the starting XI.
The forward is the Gunners’ top scorer this season and he’s been their best player by a country mile.
Wenger did eventually put him on and he proved his point by assisting Danny Welbeck’s goal. Ultimately, though, it wasn’t enough as the hosts ran out 3-1 winners.
The Telegraph have finally been able to shed some light on the matter, however, explaining what exactly led Wenger to drop his star man.
The newspaper claim that Sanchez has had several furious rows with his manager and this week stormed out of a training session.
That puts Wenger’s decision in a whole new context, and a lot of people probably owe him an apology, as it was clearly the right one under the circumstances.
Arsenal may need to get used to life without Sanchez.
The former Barcelona man has just over a year remaining on his contract, and these latest reports make it sound very unlikely he’ll be committing his future to the club.
