Mesut Ozil finally looks like the kind of player Arsene Wenger has always wanted him to be.
The playmaker has long been dubbed the assist king, but the one criticism he has always faced is that he doesn’t score enough goals.
A hat-trick against Ludogorets in the Champions League last week added to his recent tally of Premier League goals, and that can only make Arsenal more formidable as they look to prove they are the real deal in both competitions.
The Germany international has insisted nonetheless that he won’t change his style of play, despite the extra demand placed on him for goals.
“I wouldn’t say I’m more selfish. I’ll never change my playing style,” he told Arsenal’s official website.
“I’m the kind of person who, if I see a teammate in a better position, will pass to them.
“But I try to finish myself too, or to run into space, so I can finish.”
Ozil scored just eight goals last season, and he has almost equalled that already with seven. Whatever he says, he’s certainly looking more ruthless, even if it’s not entirely deliberate.
Wenger can look forward to a rejuvenated attacking midfielder too, when the international break ends. Ozil has been given time off by national coach Joachim Low, and that’s only going to make him sharper.
