Diego Costa could return to Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa may not have had his finest season at Chelsea, but it could have earned him a move back to Atletico Madrid nonetheless.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone is reportedly interested in a reunion with the Blues’ striker.

That’s according to ESPNFC, who have it that Simeone has even given the club an ultimatum, insisting they must sign Costa if they want him to remain as manager.

Costa played for the Madrid side between 2007-2009, when he was mostly out on loan, and again between 2010-2014.

Although he hasn’t shown his best form this season, he hasn’t had a lot of service from Chelsea’s lacklustre midfield.

If Atletico can keep Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez this summer, he will have far better service if he does return to Spain.

On a personal level, Costa, who previously represented Brazil at national level, should consider the move because it could improve his chances of being selected for Spain squads in the future.

He was dropped for Euro 2016 because coach Vincente del Bosque has concerns over his fitness.

For Atletico, Costa would be a superb signing.

Having lost two Champions League finals in three years, they are clearly on the lookout for a striker to take them to the next level.

When they are both on form, a partnership of Costa and Fernando Torres can help Simeone’s men to do just that.
