Big month

Despite improved form of late we fully expect Chelsea to enter the market in January and the most likely area of augmentation is their attack, which has looked laboured at times and lacks fully fit and top quality cover for Diego Costa, who has himself been mercurial this season.

The Times reports:

Chelsea are considering making bids for Jamie Vardy, of Leicester City, Saido Berahino, the West Bromwich Albion forward, and Jackson Martínez, of Atlético Madrid, while Emmanuel Adebayor’s availability has been noted and the former Tottenham Hotspur striker could be offered a short-term deal if the club fail to secure an alternative by the end of the month.

Jamie Vardy

He is having the season of his life and is probably fretting right now about whether to stay at Leicester, to help them push for a barely credible Champions League spot, or to make a lucrative move.

He will certainly get a big pay-day if he moves to a club like Chelsea. But would it help or hinder is career longer-term? Would he be a starter or spend much of his time on the bench to be used as a ‘super-sub’? And, beyond this season, would he fit into Chelsea’s plans? We aren’t so sure.

Saido Berahino

The pick of the bunch and an excellent, long-term prospect. Chelsea would be making a good investment if they brought him in.

Jackson Martinez

The 29-year-old was prolific in Portugal but the Spanish league hasn’t suited him so well hitherto and he only has 3 goals in 12 outings in all competitions for Atletico. 10 in 39 for Colombia is perhaps the best gauge of his goalscoring ability. He certainly wouldn’t be the worst signing that Chelsea could make.

Emmanuel Adebayor

One of the more curious characters in the game. There is no doubting that he can be a top player on his day and he has great feet for a big man as the cliché goes.

But this would be a proper gamble for Chelsea and you just don’t know what to expect from Adebayor. It’s well within the bounds of possibility that he could score 15 for them in the second half of the season. Equally, he could be a total flop. He’s a highly talented enigma.

Let’s see Adebayor in action
