Newcastle have been linked with big investments many times over the last few years but the reality is that a feeling of austerity still surrounds the club.
And, because of this, Newcastle can only aspire to mid-table. But if they really push the boat out this summer they could add to a really solid foundation of players with the sort of fairy dust required to push for a European place.
The Express reports that added funds will be forthcoming this summer and that four players, in particular, are on the radar to strengthen the squad considerably.
It’s believed Carr has players like £15m rated Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in his sights along with Marseille winger Andre Ayew while Newcastle are amongst a cluster of clubs interested in Danny Ings and have also registered an interest in West Brom’s Saido Berahino.
It’s quite some roster of players. We all know about the talent of Berahino. While some would question his temperament, he has been one of the stand out young players in The Premier League over the last year and scored 18 in 37 games for West Brom this season.
Danny Ings seems to have a never ending list of suitors and, while he would be a great number ten at Newcastle, they will have to pull out all the stops (and probably offer more than anyone else) in order to get him.
Mitrovic and Ayew are more realistic targets. The 20 year old Serbian Mitrovic has been on fire for Anderlecht this season scoring 20 in 37 games. And we have been particularly impressed with Ayew, whose mobility and inventiveness would be hugely popular at Newcastle.
Let’s see the lad in action. Newcastle fans: if you could have one of the above, who would you choose?
