Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will be happy with the inevitable league title that is coming his way but he will be bitterly disappointed with the manner in which his team went out of Europe.
PSG are no easy side to defeat but Chelsea remain one of the most canny and experienced sides in The Champions League and Mourinho would have hoped for more. But he’ll be back next year, stronger and fresher, for the latter rounds of the competition.
That freshness will likely come from a marginally bigger, and perhaps more youthful squad, and reports today are linking Chelsea and Manchester City with a prodigious young talent from La Liga. The Daily Mail reports:
Chelsea and Manchester City are both willing to pay the £13 million buyout clause for highly-rated Valencia left-back Jose Luis Gaya.
The source suggests that Real Madrid are also very keen. But, hold on. Haven’t they already got the phenomenon that is Marcelo, in his pomp at 26? As for Manchester City, Clichy and Kolarov provide pretty good cover on the left. But perhaps a clearout is on the cards at Middle Eastlands?
As for Chelsea, they too have quality in the shape of Filipe Luis and Cesar Azpilicueta. But the former arguably hasn’t settled the latter should eventually move to the right hand side permanently.
At 19 Gaya has shown inordinate consistency for Valencia this season, making a surprising 28 appearances and even chipping in with a couple of goals – the cheeky whippersnapper. He looks like a big prospect who is already doing the business for a top team in a top league. While Manchester City always seem to be in the queue for top talent, Chelsea may prove a more likely destination.
Let’s see the lad playing along to some beepy eurodance. Chelsea fans: are you keen on Gaya?
