‘The Gerrard slip’ will be forever etched into the minds of the Liverpool faithful. Not that it will do anything to taint their loyalty towards one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous shirt.
Perhaps it was a simple, random mistake. But there has been talk over the last 6 months that the Liverpool captain has lost some of the mobility and speed which complemented his other virtues and are such vital commodities in The Premier League.
Ideally Gerrard would be able to sit in front of the defence and hit quarter back style passes for the new few years. But the anchor man role requires a big engine and Gerrard’s may need a service.
At 34 and with 678 club appearances behind him – all for Liverpool of course – perhaps it time to start thinking about the future. Gerrard doesn’t need to be dropped altogether. But perhaps if he played 35 games instead of 50 a season he could give more for longer.
Reports on Thursday suggest that Liverpool may be looking to add dynamism to their midfield by signing a hugely underrated player who is currently at West Ham on loan. The Daily Star writes:
LIVERPOOL are chasing West Ham loanee and Barcelona midfielder Alex Song.
The Cameroonian international was a target for Reds boss Brendan Rodgers during summer, but the Northern Irishman failed to lure him to Anfield.
Song is too good to sit on the bench at Liverpool and with Jordan Henderson absolutely flying right now, we feel that this may be a move to take the pressure off and ultimately replaced The Great One.
Song doesn’t have the passing range of Gerrard but few box to box midfielders do. In fact Gerrard’s skill set is so broad that there is little point comparing any potential signing to him. Suffice to say that the Cameroon international, with 47 caps for his country, covers every blade of grass, has excellent technique and is decent all rounder who would improve most squads.
Let’s see him in action. Liverpool fans: keen?
