The biggish one

This is the sort of game in which Manchester United have been burnt this season. A couple of decent results, of late, have allowed Manchester United fans to dream again. But, every time that has happened so far this season, Manchester United have usually come unstuck once more – one step forward and twenty five years back.

But, there has to be a certain sense of pride coarsing through the veins of the Manchester United players today. Under Sir Alex they were humbled 6-1 at home and lost 4-1 at Manchester City earlier this season. Sandwiched between them was a great away win for United in Fergie’s swansong.

There may be a chasm in confidence but perhaps a smaller gap in class. Manchester United no longer have as good a squad as Manchester City, but they aren’t too far apart and Manchester United certainly have enough quality to win this game – but is the desire and pride there?

RvP is out so Manchester United may look to continue with the highly promising attacking trio of Rooney, Mata and Kagawa, who played like the old Manchester United at the weekend. We can’t see any way past City if these guys don’t start. Other than that, Smalling, Evans, Vidic and possibly even Rio are out. But we think that the latter should make it to team up with Phil Jones at the back – the best centre back partnership at United for our money.

Manchester City have Aguero and Nastasic missing but Vincent Kompany is back from suspension.

We think that this one is going to be an open game and a bit of a belter. In the absence of any real hunch as to which way it could go, you’ll find us getting splinters on the fence, with a 2-2 prediction.

Manchester United squad: Manchester United Amos, De Gea, Lindegaard, Buttner, Evans, Evra, Ferdinand, Jones, M Keane, Rafael, Varela, Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini, Fletcher, Giggs, Januzaj, Kagawa, Mata, Nani, Valencia, Young, Hernandez, Rooney, Welbeck.
