Will we see Santi Cazorla in an Arsenal shirt again?
The Spanish international’s career at the Emirates has been agonisingly disrupted by injury and while he was on course to make his return at some point this season, it was recently confirmed that he would be going under the knife once again.
It’s a tragic state of affairs for a player widely regarded as one of the Gunners’ finest. There are few players as naturally creative as him in the Premier League when he’s fit, but as he reaches the end of his contract, his future really is looking uncertain if he doesn’t feature in the remainder of the campaign.
Arsene Wenger told a press conference ahead of their final Europa League group match against BATE Borisov that he had spoken with the 32-year-old ahead of his latest operation:
“I sent him a message because he had surgery and wished him well,” the Arsenal boss said.
“He (Cazorla) answered ‘I have to start again from zero’.
Cazorla has now had his Achilles operated on times in just over a year. Speaking to Marca last month, he revealed the extent of doctors’ concerns, admitting he came close to losing a leg.
“It’s very sad,” Wenger added.
“What Santi has gone through is unbelievable. It’s really, really sad. But unfortunately he has to start again from zero.
“If all goes well he has to wait until he starts to run and after he starts to run it takes six weeks to come back to training.
“When he can start to run again I don’t know. I was hopeful of January, but after this setback certainly now not before February.”
