Arsenal are hoping to fight off competition from Manchester City and Juventus for in-demand Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who report the Gunners are planning to open talks with the 22-year-old in January.
Goretzka is available on a free transfer at the end of the season, which clears him to speak to clubs outside of the Bundesliga in the New Year.
His current side have put a deal on the table, which he is yet to sign.
The likelihood is that they will opt to cash in on the highly-rated midfielder if he indicates he wishes to move on.
The Mirror suggest Arsene Wenger sees the starlet as a potential successor to Mesut Ozil, who is in the same contract situation and is almost certain to leave unless there is a major breakthrough in negotiations.
If a deal goes ahead, he could follow in the footsteps of Sead Kolasinac, who moved to north London from Schalke for nothing in the summer.
Arsenal are already driving forward with their recruitment after the appointment of Borussia Dortmund scout Sven Mislintat, while fresh arrivals to the backroom team are expected in the coming weeks.
