Arsenal have already signalled their intent to spend big this summer as they close in on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.
The Gunners’ commitment to developing players instead of splashing the cash has been admirable, but it looks as if Arsene Wenger is ready to pursue a new policy as he embarks on another two years at the helm.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Arsenal are keen to sign Sporting Lisbon duo William Carvalho and Gelson Martins and have offered €80million.
Sporting are holding out for closer to €90m for two of their most influential players.
Both are Portugal internationals, and Carvalho was part of last year’s squad that won Euro 2016.
The 25-year-old would bring some depth to Arsenal’s central midfield, while Martins, 22, operates on the wing and scored seven goals in 43 appearances last season.
Carvalho has a release clause of €45, though it’s thought Sporting would consider letting him go for less than that. Martins, however, will cost the full €60m written into his contract.
