Few players in the history of Liverpool Football Club have gone from hero to zero as quickly as Mamadou Sakho.
The centre-back enjoyed a fine season last term, but it all ended with an investigation into banned substances – which he was eventually cleared of – and he missed the Europa League final.
Things didn’t improve in the summer as he fell out with Jurgen Klopp in pre-season. The Anfield boss subsequently sent the Frenchman home from their tour of America, and the only time he’s been seen in a red jersey since is while playing for the reserves.
It’s a shame to witness Sakho’s demise, but he hasn’t helped himself, turning down a number of clubs last summer, including West Brom and Stoke.
However, it looks as if he may be staying in the Premier League after all. According to L’Equipe, the fairly reliable French newspaper, he is set to join Southampton in the current transfer window.
The Saints could be in the market for a replacement for either Jose Fonte, who has handed in a transfer request, or Virgil Van Dijk, with the Dutchman being watched by a number of top clubs such as Manchester City.
Sakho would be a cheap replacement, but at least he is proven in English football.
The frustration of his situation on Merseyside may finally be getting to him, but he promised in his recent Instagram video that he’ll soon be back playing – so it seems he’s finally on the verge of a move.
