Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat in Fenerbahce has come at a heavy price.
Not only are Jose Mourinho’s side now staring at an early exit from the Europa League, Paul Pogba was forced off in the 29th minute with an injury.
The Frenchman was replaced by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was subsequently lucky to stay on the field himself after an altercation in which he appeared to grab the throat of Simon Kjaer.
There was nothing United could have done about Jeremain Lens’ spectacular winner, but overall they will be disappointed with another uninspiring performance, even if they had most of the possession.
The Red Devils must now focus on a trip to Swansea this weekend, but it remains to be seen whether Pogba will be fit enough to return.
The £89million man joins an already packed treatment room at Old Trafford, with Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, and Antonio Valencia all sidelined.
One man could benefit from all this, though. It seemed as if Bastian Schweinsteiger’s career at the club was dead and buried, but Mourinho said before the game that the German could return if United picked up injuries in midfield.
“At the moment, we have no problems in midfield like we have in defence but, if we have problems in midfield, it’s another option for us,” he said, via the club’s official website.
