Nabil Bentaleb has risked further alienating Tottenham after his latest comments in Bild.
The Algerian started his career so promisingly at White Hart Lane, having forged a run in the team during Tim Sherwood’s brief spell in charge.
Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival heralded the end of Bentaleb’s stardom amid reports of a rift with the Spurs boss.
This summer, the midfielder was loaned out to Bundesliga side Schalke, where he has played every league game – though question marks continue to be raised about his attitude.
Nonetheless, Bentaleb appears to be enjoying life at his new club, insisting he’s glad he left Tottenham despite their impressive run.
“Even if Tottenham were top of the league, I would not regret my move”, he said.
“At Schalke they believe in me.”
That may well be a dig at Pochettino, who could find no room in the heart of his midfield for the 21-year-old.
It’s not just that Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier, and now Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko are all stronger candidates. Bentaleb was too often caught in possession, so Pochettino had no choice but to drop him.
At this rate, it seems unlikely that he’ll be returning to Spurs when his loan spell is up, and it definitely doesn’t sound like he has any intention of going back.
