Arsenal’s summer of frustration is set to continue after chief executive Ivan Gazidis insisted the club won’t be splashing out on transfer targets.
The Gunners’ situation looks desperate going into the new season, with a striker and a centre-back urgently needed.
Serious injuries to Danny Welbeck up front and Per Mertesacker at the back have left Arsene Wenger in a difficult position just over two weeks ahead of the opening day fixture against Liverpool.
However, any hopes that fans had that Gazidis and Wenger might be about to alleviate that situation were quickly dashed by these latest comments.
“We can’t afford to outgun competitors that have far more money. We have to be very careful, very selective,” Gazidis said, as per Sky Sports.
“That means we can’t afford to make huge mistakes in the transfer market. We can’t afford to outgun competitors that have far more money to splurge on transfer fees than we do.”
Arsenal are often praised for exercising more prudence than some of their rivals near the top of the table, but there is a real danger that they could get left behind.
In fact, it’s not even about spending big, as Manchester United managed to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
Off the pitch, Arsenal may be making the right decision, but there is a fear pervading the Emirates that those decisions are going to seriously affect their fortunes on the pitch – and the Gunners’ faithful simply won’t tolerate another season without a title.
