It should have happened before Christmas and, increasingly, the feeling among the fans is one of disbelief that Louis van Gaal – or any manager for that matter – should still be in charge of Manchester United after overseeing such a protracted period of terrible results and the worst performances that this writer has ever witnessed at the club.
Under Louis van Gaal Manchester United are a sunk ship.
But, as luck would have it, there is an easy way out. A gift horse. A ready-made solution – a man who has the talent to replicate Fergie’s glory days.
It’s extremely lucky for Ed Woodward that Jose Mourinho seems, for all the world, to want to manage Manchester United. This is the best manager in the world we are talking about. He’s free and he ostensibly wants the job.
Is it so difficult to work out what needs to happen next Mr. Woodward et al?
It’s staring you in the face.
And these apparent concerns that Jose is wrong for the club in terms of his behaviour. Well, quite frankly, they are ridiculous.
Sir Alex built his reputation on controversial statements. He is probably still paying off the FA fines right now.
And when Manchester United are cuffing opponents and winning silverware again, I very much doubt anyone at the club will be too concerned with his behaviour then. Indeed, I’m sure the board will be too busy taking the plaudits for their Mourinho masterstroke.
Jose needs to have a tweak of his style and is probably aware of that.
But if Ed doesn’t bring Jose to Manchester United this week then perhaps he is the one who needs his P45.

Indeed – You are talking Ed Woodward – the risk- adverse accountant who talks the talk but does not walk the walk. How many times have we heard how EW was preparing a swoop only to have nothing happen. Ed Woodward hasn’t got the guts tp hire Mourinho.
Man U will not recover until he is long gone along with his vaudeville act partner LvG.

But it’s a massive risk on the part of Woodward to keep LvG on at this point isn’t it?
