Chelsea are now the frontrunners to sign Saido Berahino, according so Sky Sports, whose betting arm SkyBet has the striker at 7/4 to join the club in this window.
Chelsea have been linked with every remotely available striker and his dog so far in January and it’s not hard to see why when you look at their league position.
There have been rumours of experienced forwards coming in. But we think that this is the best, realistic, striker signing that Chelsea could make in this window.
At 22 he has his whole career ahead of him. He’s got that vital quality of pace. And he’s adaptable enough to play anywhere across the forward line. Furthermore he’s a goal machine when he plays every week. He hit 20 in 45 for West Brom last season and has 10 goals in 11 games for England U21s.
He would also perhaps have the sort of hunger to achieve that the older prospective buys, who have already won trophies, would not.
We find it strange that more big clubs aren’t making a move for him the winter. But their loss could be Chelsea’s gain and, if they do sign him, just watch how he quickly becomes central to the plans of Roy Hogdson in the England set up ahead of EURO 2016.
