Most of us have been assuming that Manchester United’s main focus in the window will be to bring in some genuine quality to add to the front line.
Beyond that, it was assumed that Manchester United may look for cover at left-back.
But, over the last few days, there has been something a snowball of stories about the club making a move for Dynamo Kyiv centre back Aleksandar Dragovic.
The 24 year old has the sort of no nonsense style that made Nemanja Vidic such a success in England and his manager has felt it appropriate to deal with the story head on.
Asked about the United rumours, ex-Tottenham man Sergei Rebrov said:
“Is Dragovic going to Manchester United? I doubt Dragovic reads those stories or that he gives any meaning to all that is written about him,” Rebrov said.
“I talk with Alex a lot. He is an absolutely decent man. Now he has a goal, he wants to play in the Champions League playoffs for this team.
“After that? Only God knows.”
Ironically those play-offs are against Manchester United’s arch-rivals City.
Things change quickly in football but, while his long-term future remains unclear, it seems as if the player won’t be moving to Old Trafford in January.
Standing at 6ft 1in, the 24 year old centre back has played 38 times for Austria and has more than 300 senior games under his belt for Austria Wien, FC Basel and Dynamo Kiev. He would really toughen up a Manchester United defence whose frailties have perhaps been masked by the use of two defensive midfielders for most of the season.
Let’s see some of his better moments for the club.
