Until now Chelsea’s transfer mistakes have been limited mainly to high profile strikers. Fernando Torres came in for around 50 million pounds and cost more than a million per goal with 45 in 172 for the club, in all competitions, between 2010 and the end of last year.
Before him there was Andriy Shevchencko – 22 in 77 – another who didn’t do himself justice. But some onlookers are now asking why Chelsea paid around 30m GBP for Juan Cuadrado.
It is of course early days for the Colombian, signed from Fiorentina in the January window. But having made just six appearances, mainly off the bench, Cuadrado looks anything but settled right now.
His performances have been punctuated by slight panic on the ball and a lack of composure which also brings the departure of Andre Schurrle into sharp focus. Have Chelsea, for once, traded down under Mourinho?
It’s way too early to judge Cuadrado properly. But he does need to improve his game quickly and steeply if he’s not going to be the next high profile disaster. Because the standards are so high at Chelsea that you don’t get long to bed in. For that sort of price Chelsea should be expecting immediate quality or at least the promise of. But Cuadrado looks less than accomplished right now.
He does have the raw material to succeed – pace, guile, athleticism and goal threat. But he needs to start proving his worth quickly.
Chelsea fans: happy with your latest purchase so far?

What a silly article. Cuadrado has just
arrived and won’t be fully integrated into
the squad until next season.Give the bloke a chance before writing such a
stupid story.
