When these sides were drawn to play each other a couple of months ago it looked like a foregone conclusion – almost a one-horse race.
But Real Madrid’s form has since plummeted and, for the neutral, this should liven things up considerably. Most still expect to see Real Madrid run out as convincing winners over the two legs. But their poor form in 2015, combined with injuries, has lead some to think that it’s a case of ‘game on’.
In terms of those injuries, we know that Luka Modric, Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao are out. So too, in all likelihood, are James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos. But there will be a late fitness test for Pepe, who has started training again after injury.
And, let’s face it, if any squad in the world can cope with injuries it’s that of Real Madrid. In a reminder of the depth of the playing roster, there has been talk that Carlo Ancelotti may give minutes to his two new signings, Lucas and Martin Odegaard. And, as long as Cristiano Ronaldo is fit, then Real should cope.
As for Schalke, their form has also been somewhat patchy. They lie 4th in the Bundesliga table, but have only won two of their last 6 games. But they have managed a draw with Bayern Munchen in that time and they arrive at the game in a decent moment.
But it will be crucial for them to stay in the tie in the first leg in Germany. A 0-0 would suit them fine as it leaves Real Madrid with it all to do in the return fixture. The Spanish side will be desperate for at least one away goal to give them something to build on.
This one won’t be easy but we expect Real Madrid to get through. Here is our best XI for the game. Madrid fans: let’s have your thoughts.
