Just because you are a great footballer does not mean that you are a great human being. You can most definitely be a majestic player without ever achieving greatness as a person.
But, in Victor Valdes, it looks as if Manchester United have signed both. Everyone knows how much he has achieved as a footballer with Barcelona during the most successful period in their history.
But he clearly also has his great attitude and personality to thank for his career success. Some thought that he was going to be a peripheral figure at Manchester United, perhaps becoming quickly disenchanted as a back up keeper for the superb David de Gea.
But this couldn’t be farther from the truth as the veteran keeper has already been making a great impression as an inspirational leader at Manchester United. The Daily Mail reports:
Victor Valdes has already made a huge impact at Manchester United – thanks to the inspirational tale of a man who ran marathons with his disabled son.
The three-times Champions League winner, who is yet to make his first-team bow, shared the heartwarming story of American Dick Hoyt and cerebal palsy-suffering Rick at a team meeting at the club’s Aon training complex.
There simply aren’t enough of these types of people in football these days – figures who transcend the game and remind us all of how lucky footballers are to be living the dream in times of ridiculous wages and player tantrums.
Valdes is someone who should be cherished and held on to at Manchester United. Because good players are fairly easy to find. But true leaders and great people are harder to come by.
Let’s see Valdes in a action during his debut for Manchester United.
