We knew in the summer that Barcelona faced a two window ban on signing players. This ban may yet be overturned – stranger things have happened in the world of football – but it meant that there was even more intensity about the summer activity of the club.

One of the big money moves that was mooted was for the brilliant young Spaniard Koke. We were of the belief that this lad, possibly above all others, could be the catalyst for a Barcelona resurgence and another period of dominance. Because he not only had the requisite technique for the midfield. He also had the dynamism, drive and directness which would give Barcelona an alternative style of play when the conventional methods of attack and their usually bewitching passing game was failing.

Rumours about a Barcelona bid were just that – rumours – but the player has now confirmed Barca’s interest. He said:

“We must thank the interest of Barcelona and other teams, but I’m happy because I want to be here, I’ve been here all my life and it was not time to go.

“The club is growing, we are growing as players – why I would go at the best time of Atletico Madrid?”

Barcelona have done good business in the transfer market. Ivan Rakitic is settling in well in the midfield and the return of Luis Suarez should have fans salivating with excitement.

But the addition of Koke may have been the best of the lot. Perhaps there is still a future for him at Barcelona.
