Having signed Ben Davies and Michael Vorm already for Tottenham this summer it appears that the new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is putting a lot of emphasis on defensive reinforcements.
He obviously sees this is an area of weakness in the squad and reports suggest that Tottenham are after another defender.
Ron Vlaar was a decent performer at Aston Villa last season but it was at The World Cup where his stock really rose.
Vlaar was a key component in Holland getting into the semifinals and he looks like he’s reached the point of complete maturity at 29.
Recent reports suggest that Tottenham want to do a deal which will see Vlaar coming to White Hart Lane with Lewis Holtby and Michael Dawson going to Aston Villa in exchange.
The Express says:
TOTTENHAM are ready to send Michael Dawson and Lewis Holtby to Aston Villa to beat Southampton and Manchester United to Ron Vlaar.
Dawson has been a really good defender for Tottenham but does look a little bit statuesque at times and could be on the wane at 30. As for Lewis Holtby we’ve always been quite big fans of the player. He’s a really good defensive midfielder and will also get you the odd goal.
He’s been in and around the Germany squad for the last couple of years and we think that he will mature into a really good midfielder for some club – we’d be slightly surprised if Tottenham got rid of him despite not getting much game time at Spurs so far (39 appearances in all comps plus a loan to Fulham).
So we would be tempted to say that Aston Villa could be getting the better deal of the two parties. That said, Vlaar is a really solid payer who would play a lot of important games for Tottenham and be expected to maintain a starting place in the team.
Let’s have a look at Vlaar in action. Tottenham and Aston Villa fans: who would be getting the better deal?

it doesnt make sense to send a 30 yr old defender AND a 22 yr old up and coming player for a 29 yr old defender.. if Daws is “waning” at 30.. how long before Vlarr is doing the same.. ????

I can see, however, Vlaar swapping the not-so-bright lights of Brum for the “dodge the seagull game” and the smell of fish.. Lovren would be a good acquisition for Spurs, unfortunately it looks like hes going to join ‘Pool (he must like that seagull game) and then Vlaar will go to the Saints..

Has anybody noticed just how slow Vlaar actually is. This is a seriously bad move for a totally ordinary footballer. It screams of mediocrity and the only hope here is that Levy runs true to form and refuses to buy anybody that old.
If we’re aiming for top 7, this is the sort of player we need. Holtby for Vlaar is borderline insane.

Don`t see the sense in this attempted signing a 30 year old and a 22 year old for a 29 year old the only thing i see is two players off the wage bill for 1 player and paying a 29 year old a low wage .
