The Journal reports that Sunderland are looking to make a double bid for Raul Meireles and Moussa Sow as they look to improve their squad for next season. The pair, who both play for Turkish side Fenerbache, could cost up to £18 million.
Sow joined the Turkish club in 2012 after a successful spell at Lille. The 28 year old has helped his current side to two Turkish Cups and the Super Lig title this season, scoring 35 times in 70 appearances.
Meireles is an explosive midfielder who has extensive experience in The Premier League, having played for both Liverpool and Chelsea. He joined Fenerbache in 2012 and has won league titles in Portugal and Turkey as well as a Champions League and FA Cup in 2012.
The Black Cats are seriously in need of signings this following the departure of a number of players along with the return of several loan players.
Continuing doubts over the future of Jack Colback, who has still not signed a new contract, mean that Poyet must consider a replacement to keep options in midfield. Raul Meireles would be a an ideal swap for the local lad.
Sunderland are also in need of a consistent striker. Danny Graham, Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore have all disappointed on Wearside.
Connor Wickham fought his way into the first team after a number of loan spells and played a key part in keeping the club in the top flight, but manager Gus Poyet will want to have more than one reliable goal scorer. The Frenchan Sow would certainly add depth and give more options up top.
The North East club have already made two signings this summer. Right back Billy Jones joined from West Brom while talented midfielder Jordi Gomez moved from Wigan. Sunderland also managed to secure the long term future of Sebastian Larsson and have been linked to midfielder Ever Banega in the last few days. Nathan Gibson
