Everton are gaining new admirers from across the country this season with their new brand of quick-passing, attacking and entertaining football. While they were efficient under David Moyes, they were a largely prosaic side who regularly sacrificed flair for solidity.
But Roberto Martinez has been a breath of fresh air and his football philosophy has manifested itself in the team already, with some great performances, notably in the defeat of Manchester United on their own patch. While Moyes’ style seems to have been transferred to a now very ordinary United side, Everton gave an intrepid Old Trafford display full of pace and flair.
But the new boss is clearly hungry for more and refuses to put limits on the potential of his new side. He’s reportedly looking to bring in players again in January. One player who may well end up at Goodison is Aiden McGeady. But The Daily Mail today reports that the deal won’t happen this winter. The Mail says:
Aiden McGeady has an agreement in place to join Everton although the Republic of Ireland winger won’t be joining up with his new team-mates until the summer.
Everton were keen to sort out a deal for the 27-year-old in this window but negotiations with Spartak Moscow have not been straight forward after the winger fell out with coach Valeri Karpin to the extent that he has been training with the youth and reserve players.
McGeady was also wanted by Newcastle and Aston Villa but he is signing a pre-contract with Everton and should be linking up with his new team-mates towards the end of this season.
McGeady has long been linked with Everton and he would add quality from the wide areas. He’s a really solid and consistent pro with 63 caps for The Republic of Ireland national side. He has also chipped in with a decent number of goals at club level with 31 in 185 games for Celtic and 11 in his 71 appearances for Spartak, since joining the club in 2010.
Let’s see him in a action. Everton fans – good enough for the first team?
