We at soccersweep have written many articles in the last year or so about the shortcomings in Manchester United’s midfield. In fact it’s one of our favourite topics and seems to be very popular amongst the fans also. While Sir Alex Ferguson always maintained that he had easily enough quality to keep Manchester United competitive, many fans disagreed and it’s been a hot topic for debate.
Over the last couple of years, the list of rumoured newcomers to the midfield has been almost endless. This catalogue has included Wesley Sneijder, Luka Modric, Cesc Fabregas, Marouane Fellaini and many many more. But, perhaps the most interesting point of the debate, is the response that we get every time we write such an article. Because the name that comes up, more often than any other in discussions about Manchester United’s midfield, is Kevin Strootman of PSV.
It’s quite incredible how many Manchester United fans want the guy at Old Trafford ahead of seasoned Premier League stars such as Fellaini and Fabregas. So our attention has been well and truly drawn towards the player. With ongoing speculation that he may sign for the club, Caught Offside today reports that SkyBet have suspended the market on Strootman joining Manchester United. This doesn’t mean that it’s a foregone conclusion, but obviously lots of money is suddenly going on the player coming to Manchester United, which suggests the possible leak of some insider information.
Strootman is an adaptable, left-footed central midfielder who can play in an advanced playmaker role, or just in front of the defence. At 21 and with 18 full international caps with Holland already to his name he is regarded by some as a future captain of the national team. He’s essentially a box-to-box man with a great engine and excellent speed of thought.
Last month, PSV boss Dick Advocaat extolled the virtues of his player to De Telegraaf.
“He’s the reserve captain of the Dutch national squad and PSV will make another step next season. This guy fits everywhere. He’s a fantastic player because he knows exactly what his qualities are.
“[He would be good for] Liverpool and Tottenham, but I think he’s also good enough for Manchester City and Manchester United.”
