Manchester United’s first summer signing?

Despite the recent progress of young Spaniard David De Gea, in between the sticks at Manchester United, rumours are still rife that another high profile keeper will be brought to Old Trafford in the summer.

The Telegraph suggests that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to bring in another top keeper, to ease the burden on his coltish £18m man and add competition for places, after the alarming demise of Anders Lindegaard. The Dane had a promising start to his career at Manchester United, but completely lost the plot in the 4-3 defeat of Reading in December, and has never recovered. He is rumoured to be heading out of the club at the end of the season, possibly to West Ham.

So Manchester United are going to need another keeper and Asmir Begovic, 25, is reportedly top of Fergie’s wishlist. The Stoke stopper has long been linked with United and the broadsheet reckons that, with other potential suitors lining up, the Bosnian beefcake could cost up to 20 million squid.

But if De Gea is to stay at Manchester United then would Begovic, an established first team player and full international, be happy to start next season as 2nd choice? With Arsenal also seemingly keen, he may prefer to head to a destination with guarantees of first team football. It also seems unlikely that Manchester United would shell out £40m on 2 keepers in 3 years. If there is any truth to this story, then perhaps De Gea will be on his way to Barcelona, to fill the boots of the ageing Victor Valdes.

De Gea possibly has greater potential than Begovic but is still a work in progress. The Bosnian, meanwhile, already looks like the finished article – a commanding presence in his area with great hands and shot stopping prowess. He makes himself the size of a hoose as Andy Gray might say.

So who would you rather have between the sticks at Old Trafford? De Gea or Begovic?

That’s preposterous, United already have a “top-notch” goalkeeper.

Very difficult question to answer, obviously the Bosnian is a very talented keeper, and the potential for David De Gea is enormous, my
ideal situation would be to have both, but would they both be happy to share the no 1 spot?, but if i was forced to make a choice i would have to choose De Gea, over the years United have been famous for producing
stars of the game from young players, i must say i was a little surprised a young Spanish keeper with potential would agree to leave
Spain and come to a club the size of Manchester United, but he did and i feel he deserves a little bit of loyalty from the club for his move.

    Simple. Ddg.
Begovic is better at crosses, but David can work on that one.

Absolute rubbish – the only way that this kid will leave OT is if idiots in the media continue to harass him. Are you not watching his current form.

Yet again, Utd and SAF seem to lose focus on the obvious. They bought yet another winger in Zaha, talking about more wingers ( Rodriguez et el ) and now a keeper. But the big gaping hole in midfield is getting bigger. Even the “worst signing of 2012 in Spain” aka Modric drove a bus thru’ the hole and scored at OT. Utd’s feeble midfield was awol. Sorry, SAF , you are out of touch with modern football. Even a retired NBA player ( how much does he know about football? ) has just said the same thing. If Utd do not sign quality in midfield, next season would be the same. Scraping for domestic title ( yes, EPL seems in decline ) but humbled in Europe. How about an ” all change ” scenario? New manager, new players and a new start??

De Gea is easily the better shot stopper but when it comes to set pieces, he is one of the worst around, poor decision making

Begovic on the other hand is brilliant overall and mainly with set pieces, perhaps Because he Trains week in week out with a side that is surviving in PL mainly because of set pieces 😛 Stoke
