So it went particularly badly against Bayern Munich. The football gods simply weren’t smiling on Arsenal on Wednesday night. The early penalty could have settled the nerves and completely altered the course of the game.
But when Ozil missed, you got that gut feeling that things were going to spiral downwards. Arsenal, to their credit, kept knocking on the door, but the dismissal before half time killed the game.
To beat Bayern Munich you need to be very good and very fortunate. To do it with ten men would be nigh on impossible. The 2-0 scoreline leaves Arsenal little hope for Champions League progress this season and they must now concentrate on the domestic program, in which they are still very much embroiled.
Beyond that Arsene Wenger needs to have a really top summer in the transfer market to bring in the two or three players who can put Arsenal in a position to get past Bayern Munich at the third time of asking.
The Metro reckons today that Arsenal could go in for a flying machine come the summer:
Arsenal are tracking PSV winger Zakaria Bakkali and could move for the player at the end of the season, according to a source at the Dutch club.
Bakkali, 18, hit the headlines earlier this season after becoming the youngest player to score a hat-trick in a league match in Holland.
‘Bakkali is a player that Wenger rates highly,’ said the PSV source to the Dutch media.
As far as we are concerned you can’t have too many pacey forwards and wingers. Arsenal should simply keep buying them until they find a true gem. Pace is paramount to success in The Premier League and teams who don’t have a lot of it tend to struggle. This guy is said to be a little like Eden Hazard. So, bring it on….
Arsenal have been linked to this kid before so perhaps there is substance to the tale. Let’s see him in action.
