Moyes to bring boy wonder to Manchester United?

Last close-season, Leighton Baines was reportedly high on Manchester United’s wish list, although soccersweep couldn’t see how he would displace the still extraordinary Patrice Evra from the team. This summer, many areas of the media have implied that Marouane Fellaini, the human microphone, may join new Manchester United manager David Moyes at The Theatre.

This story seems to have legs – various broadsheets have got on board with the idea – although there are still doubts in this camp as to whether the Belgian alone provides the answer to questions regarding United’s midfield. Fellaini is a very good player but is he the perfect partner for Micheal Carrick or would a more impish and technical magician, such as Cesc Fabregas, better suit Manchester United’s needs? You do the math.

And, with this in mind, there is at least one more Everton player who could garner interest from Moyes. What are Ross Barkley’s prospects of joining Manchester United? The 19 year old burst onto the Everton scene with almost as much hype as the now supremely decorated Wayne Rooney. If a little more languid and a little less explosive, than when we first encountered him, Barkley is a fluid and clever player in the ilk of Jack Wilshere – a mercurial attacking midfielder with great promise – if a tiny bit less bite.

On October 18, 2011 Moyes said of Barkley:

“Every club will want Ross as he is going to be an outstanding player,”

“I’m worried it will be difficult for us in the future. If someone comes for Ross I’ve always said it’s expensive to buy off Everton.

“If you’re going to come and try to take our better players we don’t sell cheap, that’s for sure. I’m sure the bigger clubs will be looking at him, but we’ve no intention of selling.

“I think we’ve got the team to carry Ross. The club is in a much better position [than with Rooney]. Can we carry someone like Ross now? Of course we can. Maybe when we had Wayne I didn’t think we could hang on to someone of that talent, at that period.”

Barkley hasn’t quite enjoyed the same trajectory as his gifted predecessor however and has spent most of this season on loan at Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday. But he has been back at Everton of late and gave this performance against Arsenal in April.

If Moyes still believes that Barkley will become one of the best then perhaps he will be the player that the new Manchester United boss decides to cherry pick from Everton this summer.
