We have had a really interesting response from Manchester United fans in relation to our recent piece about Manchester United’s 7 untouchables.
Many of you think that Shaw should be off the list and Daley Blind should be in.
But the most overwhelming support came for Manchester United’s new midfield man Ander Herrera. The Spaniard is out with a cracked rib right now. But his early season form impressed many of you to the point that you believe he should be on the list of ‘untouchables’.
We just think that it’s way too early to say whether this guy has what it takes to become a legend at Manchester United. He’s scored a couple and shown some really nice touches.
But he’s not a quick player. And while he’s happy to get stuck in, nor is he particularly strong physically. So we need to see £30m worth of superb technique in the style of a David Silva – a proper orchestrator who is central to everything and never gives the ball away.
And, for a 24 year old who has been brought to the club for his ball retention and creative skills, we have seen far too many unforced errors so far. He regularly does the hard bit well before a careless lay off which gives the ball back to the opposition.
We aren’t suggesting for a moment that he doesn’t have the potential to be a great. Maybe he does. But we think it’s way too early to suggest that he will write his name into the Manchester United history books alongside the likes of Scholes, Beckham and Keane – or that he’s even worth £30m.
Some Manchester United fans are perhaps concentrating on the good bits and overlooking the bad. And Herrera would surely be among the first to admit that he can do a lot better for Manchester United.
The portents are encouraging but we believe that improvement is needed before Herrera can be regarded as a first team regular when everyone is fit, let alone an untouchable in this Manchester United side.
Manchester United fans: have any of you picked up on the less positive aspects of Herrera’s first month at the club? Or can he do no wrong?
