Arsenal: Transfer deal ‘categorically denied’

Alvaro Morata

Deal perhaps not so close after all?

All the fluff in the papers over the last few days has been about the potential deal to take Real madrid’s precocious striker Alvaro Morata to Arsenal on loan in the January window.

One of the reasons that this story is so compelling is that it makes so much sense. Although Morata has seen more game time with Real Madrid this season (14 appearances albeit, mainly, from the bench), at 21, he needs to get some substantial minutes under his belt to hone his skills.

Arsenal look fragile up front and even if Olivier Giroud avoids injury he can’t be expected to remain fresh with all the games that Arsenal have ahead. With the chances of signing a really top target in January remote Morata appears to be the perfect option for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.

Perhaps a little hastily, The Daily Express reported yesterday that a deal was in place for the young Spaniard. It said:

ARSENAL have agreed to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata on a six-month loan deal in January.

But Spanish newspaper Marca, who are known to have strong links with Real Madrid, have been informed that no such deal is currently in place. Marca says:

According to the ‘Daily Express’, Morata will be loaned out to Arsenal in January. However, Real Madrid sources consulted by MARCA categorically denied the reports.

Whilst rumours in England claim that Morata is Arsene Wenger’s first choice as an alternative to Frenchman Olivier Giroud, Real Madrid flatly denied that the striker will be loaned to the London club in the upcoming winter transfer window.

It could still work out to be a great deal for all concerned. The question is really whether Real Madrid have enough of their own cover for main striker Karim Benzema to let Morata go out on loan. He is the only senior conventional striker at the club. But, they do of course have Bale and Ronaldo, who also regularly play up front.

We shall, of course, keep you updated as events unfurl.
