Martin Skrtel will no doubt have been delighted when he saw Fenerbahce’s name drawn in the same Europa League group as Manchester United.
The Slovakian received the appropriate amount of abuse a fortnight ago when he travelled to Old Trafford with his new side, having left Liverpool at the end of last season.
On that occasion, Fenerbahce slumped to a 4-1 defeat, so he will have enjoyed the two sides’ most recent encounter all the more.
United’s 2-1 loss in Turkey on Thursday night will have been particularly hard to swallow given Skrtel’s presence in the side.
And rather than make peace with his old adversaries, he chose to fan the flames with a cheeky caption on his Instagram photo:
After the usual stuff about thanking fans for their support, he added in a casual ‘YNWA’, the acronym for ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
It’s bound to have wound up United supporters up no end – at least those weird enough to follow a former Liverpool defender on social media – but Reds fans absolutely loved it.
On the bright side, that’s almost certainly the last time United will come into contact with him, so it should all be forgotten about soon enough.
