Chelsea will have to up the ante if they want to sign Andre Gomes, with the Sun reporting that Valencia have turned down the Blues’ £40million bid for the Portuguese midfielder.
That doesn’t mean a deal won’t happen, but the La Liga side are hoping to reach an agreement closer to £55million.
Real Madrid and Juventus are also interested, and the latter could choose Gomes to replace Paul Pogba, who is almost certainly leaving the Old Lady.
Gomes would fit perfectly into Antonio Conte’s midfield and could resolve many of the problems Chelsea had in that area last season, so he is worth pursuing even if he’s not going to come cheap.
The Portuguese is a superb passer of the ball, while he also likes to get forward, having scored nine goals during his time at Valencia.
Conte, whose Italy side are now out of Euro 2016 having lost to Germany on penalties, will be keeping a keen eye on Gomes as he takes part in Portugal’s semi-final against Wales on Wednesday night.
