Klopp close to signing keeper

LIVERPOOL are closing in on a £4.7million deal for Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the 22-year-old Germany Under-21 international and is confident of getting his man.

According to German outlet Kicker: “Karius will now ‘almost certainly’ leave Mainz this summer, and will arrive on Merseyside as Klopp’s new No. 1.

“Karius signed a new contract with Mainz in January of last year, but agreed a release clause with his current employer.

“This would allow Liverpool to trigger his transfer without requiring negotiation with Mainz.”

Klopp has close ties with Mainz having managed the club from 2001 to 2008 before taking over at Borussia Dortmund and believes 6ft 3ins Karius is the ideal man to provide greater competition for Simon Mignolet at Anfield.

Karius himself is no stranger to English football. He spent two years in Manchester City’s youth ranks before leaving at the age of 17 in 2011.

Liverpool signed Adam Bogdan as back-up on a free transfer a year ago but the Hungary international is expected to leave the Reds this summer having struggled to impress.
