MANCHESTER UNITED are closely monitoring Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi as they attempt to bolster their backline ahead of next season.
However, the 24-year-old has also interested Juventus so Champions League qualification could be essential for United if they want to seal this deal, while Premier League rivals Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the German international.
Mustafi, who has been one bright spark in a season worth forgetting for Valencia, recently revealed he’d consider leaving the Mestalla if the right offer came along.
He said: “I have a contract here and get on very well (with everyone), but the offers are always there and in football you never know what will happen, as anything can happen. However, I will assess at the end of the season.”
While Daley Blind has done an admirable job for much of the season alongside the vastly-improved Chris Smalling, United don’t have much else to call on in the centre of defence.
Marcos Rojo has yet to really convince, and Phil Jones still makes too many basic mistakes … when he is not hampered by continual injury problems.
Mustafi is a ‘real’ defender.
He does the basics brilliantly, winning headers, timing tackles and getting the ball away from danger quickly and would certainly add some steel to the United defence, something the Red Devils have missed since Nemanja Vidic left Old Trafford in 2014.
