Europa boost for Liverpool

Neven Subotic

LIVERPOOL’s Europa League ambitions received a boost as Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Reds welcome the German side to Anfield on Thursday as Jurgen Klopp prepares to try and overcome his old club to reach the competition’s last four.

A club statement read: “Bitter news for Borussia Dortmund and Neven Subotic: the central defender, who gave seven convincing performances both nationally and internationally for BVB in the second half of this season, will miss the rest of the 2015-16 season.

“The defender, who has been with Dortmund since 2008, cannot take part in any contact sport due a thrombosis in his arm. Instead he will have individual training sessions.”

In another blow for the Bundesliga high-flyers, key man Ilkay Gundogan may also be ruled out of the clash with Liverpool. The German international is still suffering from an injury he picked up four weeks ago.

Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel said: “We do not know why it is taking so long.

“It does not hurt when sprinting or wearing football shoes so we hope he can resume training next week.”
