MANCHESTER UNITED captain Wayne Rooney could be a shock departure from Old Trafford at the end of the season.
United are reportedly considering a monstrous offer from a Chinese Super League club that would see the 30-year-old, who is currently sidelined for at least six weeks with a knee injury, become the latest big name to join the fastest-growing league in the world.
According to the Mirror: “Wayne Rooney is at the centre of an incredible £100million deal to lure him from Manchester United to China this summer.
The Red Devils have reportedly received a £27m bid from an unnamed Chinese Super League club, believed to be Shanghai Shenhua, to take Rooney from England at the end of the season.
The club is prepared to offer him £500,000 a week for a three-year deal to see off another Chinese club ready to enter the battle for the forward.
After bursting onto the scene at United with a hat-trick on his Champions League debut back in 2004, life hasn’t always been plain sailing for Rooney at Old Trafford and he’s been the subject of transfer speculation in the past, most notably a failed bid by Chelsea in 2013.
Although still only 30, the striker’s body has taken a battering since making his senior debut for Everton at just 16 years of age. And with his influence in the Premier League waning, it could be too big a carrot for the England skipper to knock back.
However, Rooney remains the most marketable player at United and while his exit would in many ways mark the true ending of an era, there’s nowhere else the Red Devils would get anything like £27m if they were to sell him either this summer or at some stage in the future.
Rooney has talked about wanting to play for England beyond this year’s European Championship but a move to China would surely spell an end to his international career.
Obviously much will depend on who is in charge at Old Trafford next season and what role they see for Rooney, but we believe he could be the biggest name to exit United in a summer clear-out.
Should United cash in, take the £27m and let Rooney go, or does he still have an important role in the rebuilding of the club?
