What a player

Manchester City head coach Manuel Pellegrini was today asked to comment on speculation linking the club with a move for the wonderful talents of Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

The boss said:

“I don’t talk about rumours. We could have very long press conference every week about the different players that will arrive here at Manchester City.

He went on:

“We are happy with the squad and not thinking about bringing in any player or to sell any other player. I don’t want to talk about individual names because after that what I say will be highlighted or changed.”

We at soccersweep have discussed the player’s suitability to Manchester City on several occasions. In truth he would fit well into any team in Europe.

And the vacuum that will surely be created at Manchester City by the eventual departure of Yaya Toure – who we believe to be, on his day, the best midfielder that The Premier League has witnessed – is going to take some filling.

And only a few, even remotely gettable players in the modern game have the same sort of physical prowess and skill set as the Ivory Coast international.

As well as Koke at Atletico and Paul Pogba at Juventus, Barkley is arguably among that small number.

At 22, he’s already a beast of a young man who looks so hungry to make a name for himself on the world stage – and what a stage Manchester City would be.

But, in a wonderful fillip for the football neutral, there is so much money sloshing around The Premier League these days that the ‘smaller’ clubs don’t have to sell.

So, unless the player himself asks for a move then City won’t get him. And even if Barkley were to stun the locals and demand a transfer, Everton could put a number to his name that even the great Stephen Hawking himself may struggle to comprehend.

But he is one of our favourite players and, for that reason alone, let’s see some of his magic for Everton.

You might have money, but don’t confuse ‘poorer’ with ‘smaller’.
