‘In a footballing decline’: Do Manchester United really want to pay 8 figures to sign a player who is getting this sort of criticism in his home country?

This is a very interesting news piece.

Call it January nonsense or substantial speculation but Manchester United have been strongly linked, over the last week, with the inordinate talents of Real Madid star James Rodriguez – or Hamez to those of a Spanish persuasion.

Manchester United were earlier this week linked with a £60M plus move for the player and the instincts would tell most of us football lovers that, even at this price, it’s a deal worth doing for a player who, at 24, does things on the football field that regularly seem to defy the laws of physics.

But he’s fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid and Colombian journalist, Ivan Meji has been quoted in The Manchester Evening News, as criticising the player heavily. He said:

“He’s in a footballing decline, he’s not playing well.

“The Madrid board are worried because he’s not that same James that arrived after the World Cup. He’s racing his car, he’s going out at night, He’s making appearances in Qatar…

“He’s lost all sense of perspective and isn’t training well.

Ouch!

The journalist goes on to say that he, Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos were the main protagonists in getting Rafa Benitez sacked and that if he doesn’t find some humility soon he will end up being a flash in the pan.

Rodriguez moved to Real Madrid in 2014 on the back of a stunning World Cup and, at the end of the group stage, he was considered to be the best performer at the tournament by FIFA.

He had a great first season at Madrid, scoring 17 in 46 but hasn’t been as effective since.

Despite the reports we think that Manchester United fans would be made up if the club signed Rodriguez this January and when you see his highlights you will probably agree that he is worth the gamble.
