No rest

Liverpool’s newish manager Jurgen Klopp has seen at first hand how intense The Premier League can be.

While The Bundesliga took a month out over Christmas, Klopp and Liverpool were slogging it out in the busiest part of the English fixture list.

There are always calls for a mid-season break in England but isn’t that part of what makes it so attractive? How many of you would accept a month with no footy over the festive period? Perish the thought.

But it does take its toll on players and Liverpool registered another couple of injuries in the 1-0 defeat of Stoke on Tuesday night, as Dejan Lovren and Philippe Coutinho both pulled hamstrings.

With Flanagan, Sakho, Henderson, Origi, Skrtel, Sturridge, Ings and Gomez also on the treatment table, the Liverpool boss has suggested that investment may be required in January:

The Guardian reports:

Jürgen Klopp may enter transfer market

Klopp stated this may force him to add to his squad.

“In this moment with no centre-backs fit I would say in this situation maybe we should think about that,” the German said. “Two weeks ago we had three centre-backs – that’s a good situation. When Liverpool started the season they had five with Joe Gomez and now nil in this moment.

We would love to see Liverpool go for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels. The Germany international would fit in perfectly with Liverpool’s football traditions as the silky, ball-playing centre back that he is.

He’s probably not gettable in January and Klopp may have to look for a more short-term option. But he may decide to hold out for players to return.

In defence, Martin Skrtel is expected back next month and the excellent Jon Flanagan is scheduled to end his injury nightmare this month. But a lack of transfer activity would mean that Liverpool and Klopp would be left short for the next few weeks at least.
