Farcical: 1 point out of 15 but Manchester United boss says there’s ‘no reason’ to resign

What’s going on?

It’s all become rather farcical at Manchester United of late.

After an horrific run which would have seen most managers sacked – never mind the manager of Manchester United – the newsline coming out of Old Trafford at the weekend beggared belief.

The Independent wrote:

Manchester United are engaged in a desperate attempt to stop Louis van Gaal walking away from Old Trafford

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail said:

It is understood, however, that Woodward has implored the man he appointed 18 months ago to stay on until at least after Monday evening’s home game with Chelsea.

And a somewhat reinvigorated and newly stubborn Louis van Gaal said, after another goalless draw and more lost ground:

“When the players give such a performance with a lot of pressure, there’s no reason to resign.”

The feeling is that the manager wants to leave but the top brass are desperately trying to hang on to the man who has arguably taken Manchester United backwards and spent around £250m in the process – how far the bar has dropped at the club.

Our concern is not so much with Van Gaal anymore but with the people making the staffing decisions at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are not getting results in one of the most results driven businesses that you will find anywhere.

Yet they are begging the architect of the results to stay even though they have a results machine in the shape of Jose Mourinho waiting in the wings.

Have the Manchester United board and Woodward simply overthought this one? Are they not aware that they can save the club and their own reputations by stopping the rot now when hey have the perfect opportunity to get the one of the top three managers in the world into the club?

Manchester United’s problems look increasingly of their own doing.

    Good aarticle!
It’s sad to see many football correpondents actually think that 0-0 at home against no. 16 in the Premier League is Progress. It’s not surprising that United’s philosopher thinks the same, he obviously tries to save his skin.
