It’s been a disappointing week for Manchester United as the fans witnessed yet another false start in the tenure of Louis van Gaal.
Manchester United needed to beat PSV to qualify for the knockout phase of The Champions League but that fact almost seemed lost on the players, who lacked urgency throughout the 90 minutes at Old Trafford. We were shocked to see sideways passes even during injury time at the end of the game.
Now Manchester United will, in all likelihood, need to beat Wolfsburg on their own patch in order to progress.
While it’s definitely doable Manchester United will have to play a whole lot better against a team that hasn’t lost at home for 29 games if they want to make the next round.
United need to shake themselves out of this slumber fast because hopes for the season will quickly ebb away with numb performances like this.
Wayne Rooney was awful, Memphis and Martial muted and Jesse Lingard wasteful.
None of them offered a compelling reason to start the game at the weekend and many are now calling for Wayne Rooney to be dropped.
But he probably wouldn’t have skyed the gilt-edged opportunity that Lingard had to put the game to bed and, for this reason, it’s the young Englishman who gets the axe for the weekend match.
It’s not the first time that Lingard has missed a sitter. I could have scored with the chance he had to chip the keeper against Watford – that nearly cost United the win at Watford and his miss here may mean Europa League for United.
Forwards are there to score goals and Lingard doesn’t currently have the finesse to merit a place in the team. We are also dropping Rooney deeper into the midfield to add some creativity to a moribund engine room.
So here is our XI for a game that can take United top of the league. Should they decide to turn up.
Manchester United fans: would you drop Rooney?
