Manchester United did some good work on Sunday, if falling a little short of the creative requirements to beat a side of Manchester City’s calibre.
But one notable area of strength was in defence where Manchester United continue to resemble a solid outfit.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have made the centre back berths their own of late but, at left-back, Marcos Rojo has been getting mixed reviews since his return from injury.
But he was absolutely superb against the wide threat of Manchester City on Sunday, blocking every attempt to pass him and making some brilliant pre-emptive challenges before City forwards could turn and attack.
And the performance didn’t go unmerited by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal who had this to say about the 25 year old Argentian international:
‘He had very good passes and very good crosses so I am very satisfied with him.
‘It is only his third game this season; he has hardly played for 90 minutes. I am very happy that at last he has the condition to play a full match.’
We have been huge fans of Rojo since he joined Manchester United.
We think that he can do a great job at left back or in the middle and, now that he has found full fitness, he may eventually put pressure on Jones and Smalling at centre back.
But, until Luke Shaw returns from injury, Rojo now looks as if he has nailed down the left fullback position after a commanding display at Old Trafford.
